Claus Brunsmann´s multilayered abstract paintings channel the viewers visual experience. These images characterize the artist’s continuing experimentation with color and spatial tension, oscillating between the figurative and the abstract, to create an open-ended painting whose aim might be the evocation of diverging possibilities in the act of seeing.
Die vielschichtigen abstrakten Gemälde von Claus Brunsmann kanalisieren die visuelle Erfahrung des Betrachters. Diese Bilder charakterisieren das fortwährende Experimentieren des Künstlers mit Farbe und räumlichen Spannungen, das zwischen Figurativem und Abstraktem oszilliert, um eine ergebnisoffene Malerei zu schaffen, deren Ziel es sein könnte, divergierende Möglichkeiten im Akt des Sehens zu evozieren.

Es ist eine lange Tradition.
Hier ist ein Gemälde aus meiner Ausstellung „CLAUS BRUNSMANN“ in der Mailänder Galerie Slavatore Ala im Jahr 2000, das 2017 im Rahmen des von Jenny Lamensdorf für Time Equities kuratierten Projekts „ART IN BUILDINGS“ nach New York City reiste und in der 50 West Street ausgestellt wurde. Ursprünglich sollte dieses Gemälde wie Haut wirken, gemalt mit künstlichem Make-up, ähnlich wie Lippenstift. Es hat eine sogenannte Bolus-Grundierung, die als Grundschicht für das Auftragen von Gold dient. Natürlich beschäftigt sich dieses Gemälde mit Alchemie und hier mit der Erschaffung des Lebens selbst. Abstrakte Malerei ist ein ritueller Prozess, der eng mit dem Erhabenen, dem Unbekannten oder wie auch immer man diese höheren Ebenen der Spiritualität nennen möchte, verbunden ist. Die Rückseite stellt den Tod dar. Ich habe ein Video gedreht, um diese Idee zu veranschaulichen.

It's a long tradition.
Here is a painting from my 2000 exhibition "CLAUS BRUNSMANN" at the Slavatore Ala gallery in Milan, which traveled to New York City in 2017 to be exhibited at 50 West Street as part of the "ART IN BUILDINGS" project curated by Jenny Lamensdorf for Time Equities. Originally, this painting was intended to resemble skin, painted with artificial makeup, similar to lipstick. It has a so-called bolus primer, which serves as a base layer for the application of gold. Clearly, this painting deals with alchemy, and in this case, the creation of life itself. Abstract painting is a ritual process closely connected to the sublime, the unknown, or whatever you want to call these higher planes of spirituality. The reverse represents death. I made a video to illustrate this idea.
